Carpenters

We recently had two major built-in bookcases added in our home, by a cabinet maker craftsman recommended by a friend. The work was excellent -- from design based on heavy interactions with us, to fabrication of the elements off site, to final installation and painting. The units included some glass doors, wood doors and shelves, a library ladder on a track, and a lighting system. The cost was half of that quoted by California Closets. The cabinet maker is Michael Brown, who operates as Blackwood Forest Services (P.O.Box 38, Goldvein VA 22720, 540-439-3118). We highly recommend him.

After several attempts at patching and repainting the wood in our bay window, we finally had the wood totally replaced by solid, non rotting plastic. The carpenter who did the replacement was excellent, obtaining all needed materials, rebuilding the bay window area to look just like the previous wooden construction, and completeing the work in a timely manner and at a reasonable cost. The carpenter is Marc Dudek, who operates as Dudek Carpentry (20396 White Oak Drive, Sterling, VA. 20165-2542, 703-507-1048). We highly recommend him.

We have just had some repair work done by our carpenter/handyman. Our first project was installation of an elevator shaft which he handled well including carpentry, dry wall and painting. He has available electricians, etc. for work he doesn't do himself. Recently he has done minor household work including retaping and painting the dining room ceiling. The work has been excellent and if past experience is a guide the final bill will be well within reason. David Sider trades as "Do All Tell All" and can be reached at (703)304-3122.

Larry Warren Had a good experience with a firm known as Exterior Medics which is located in Alexandria. (703/942-6553). The fascia board along the front of our house was rotting out. Don't know why, but it was badly deteriorated and would not hold paint. We had at least five contractors look at. The first three declined to bid because they said that the job would involve removing the gutters and they were not comfortable with that. We got one bid from a well known local contracting company of $20,000, and a bid from Exterior Medics for about $3,000. The high bidder said that the only way to do the job was to destroy the old gutters and $15,000 of their bid involved new gutters along the front of the house. Exterior did the job in one day, used the specified paint for the job, did not have to remove or damage the gutters, and the result looks good. The company has been in business for a number of years and checks out well on Angie's List.
